Major insurance provider Aviva are trying to persuade companies to become more proactive in preventing slip and trip accidents in their workplace. This is because these accidents can cause the affected employee to make a personal injury claim against the company.
The campaign is called Simply Safety, and showed that HSE research for the 2009/2010 period showed that 2.4 million sick days were taken in the manufacturing industry alone. That year saw 25 deaths and, out of the 4,000 injuries that occurred, 21% were caused by slips or trips. These types of work accidents can result in a serious personal injury.
Aviva’s research also said that many of these accidents were caused by “bad housekeeping” – how pallets were positioned on the floor or trailing cables. This is worrying because accidents caused by these factors can make the employer liable.
Other research has shown that the manufacturing sector has not grown this fast for the last sixteen years. Therefore, there has never been a better time to introduce the necessary procedures to make the workplace safer.
